Exodus 18

Jethro appears strangely and is strangely dismissed, (or set loose, or sent away), yet he outlines and implements a management strategy for Moses. Equally strange is the dismissals of Zipporah, the wife of Moses. I haven't yet done the earlier chapters in full.

Note that דבר can be glossed as word, matter, or thing. And also as a verb to speak. (And also several other glosses, both verbs and nouns, including pestilence.) In this passage, it occurs 11 times between verses 11 and 26. I have used matter 7 times and thing 4 in this case, distinguishing the individual cases from the process that Moses was doing single-handed. Just a hint of cultural and interpersonal issues in this section.

1 When Jethro, a priest of Midian, father-in-law of Moses, heard all that God had done for Moses and for Israel with him,
that Yahweh brought out Israel from Egypt,

2 Then Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, took Zipporah, the wife of Moses,
after her dismissals,

Jeremiah 40

There is much of historical and political history here concerning dispersal of Judeans and fraternal warfare as well. The many names are largely unknown to me, but there they are and one could consult a good commentary to find out more.

The overture from Nebuzaradan to Jeremiah is curious. Is this overlord of the executioners a secret admirer of the prophet? He almost seems to speak Jeremiah's language, but I will have to wait to see if more is revealed. Based on the rough number of occurrences, I doubt we will hear any more of him. A derivative of נשא, lift up, is used for the idea of gift, a donation, or handout, or special interest gift from N to J. I have used ration card and care package somewhat anachronistically, remembering the treatment of citizens after the second war in the last century.

1 The word that happened to Jeremiah from Yahweh, after Nebuzaradan, the overlord of the slaughterers, set him loose from Ramah,
when he took him and he was bound in chains, in the midst of all the exiled of Jerusalem and Judah, the exiles going toward Babel.

2 Kings 25

Looks like I forgot to post this one. Am getting ahead of myself. This parallels Jeremiah 52, and 40, soon to come. Then I think several chapters of Exodus for a respite.

2 Kings 25 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And it happened in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth new moon, on the tenth of the month, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, came, he and all his force, against Jerusalem, and encamped against her,
and they built against her a siege-wall round about.
3c 4B 49
10
2 And the city came under siege,
until the eleventh year of the reign of Zedekiah.
3e 4C 8
14
3 On the ninth of the month so resolute was the famine in the city,
that there was no bread for the people of the land.
3e 4B 15
10
4 And the city was split, and all the men of the battle in the night, by way of the gate between the walls, by the king's garden. And the Chaldeans were against the city round about,
and they went by way of the steppe.
3e 4C 41
9
5 And the force of the Chaldeans pursued after the king and they overtook him in the steppes of Jericho,
and all his force was dispersed from him.
3e 4C 24
10

6 And they arrested the king, and they brought him up to the king of Babel toward Riblah,
and they subjugated him to judgment.
3d 4A 22
7

7 And the children of Zedekiah they butchered before his eyes,
and the eyes of Zedekiah, he blinded, and bound him with brass chains, and brought him to Babel.
3e 4C 14
24

8 And in the fifth month, on the seventh of the month, (this was year nineteen of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel)
Nebuzaradan, the overlord of the slaughterers, a servant of the king of Babel, entered Jerusalem.
3c 4C 35

9 And he incinerated the house of Yahweh, and the house of the king,
and all the houses of Jerusalem and every great house, he incinerated in the fire.
3c 4B 13
19

11 And the remaining of the people, the residue in the city, and the fallen that fell to the king of Babel, and the remaining of the tumult,
Nebuzaradan, the overlord of the slaughterers, had exiled.
3e 4C 34
11
12 But from the weak of the land, the overlord of the slaughterers left a residue,
for the vineyards and for the ploughed fields.

and they bore away their brass toward Babel.

Jeremiah 41

Filling in some holes in my sequences. Almost completed the last chapters of Jeremiah.

This aftermath of destruction is not a credit to the people involved. Of course we know none of them personally. But they were all labelled as 'child of x', and there were 'little ones' as you can read. There is both betrayal and rescue.

Genesis 12

I thought in approaching and passing the 50% 'complete' milestone, I should do a chapter or two from some books that I have long ignored.

I came across something I hadn't yet considered in Genesis 12, beginning the story of Abraham.

What was the soul, הנפשׁ that Abram and Sarai took with them? I don't do soul, and it is not the souls, plural. There were undoubtedly other people in their party since they had stuff to carry for such an expedition. But soul, singular? Just another question and there will be more in this area, perhaps נפשׁ is a collective noun.  Wouldn't that be a surprise! E.g. Genesis 46:15, כָּל־נֶפֶשׁ בָּנָיו, all the soul of his children. Other translations just leave the word out. There we are. I do that too.

For the record, here are the glosses I have used to date for the root Nun Peh Shin
-- (part of the phrase, not specifically translated), being, cadaver, group, himself, individual, integrity, itself, myself, now, ourselves, own, self, themselves, throat, very self, vitality, yourselves.

This language issue aside, it is instructive to read this having seen a good chunk of the literary corpus that has arisen from this root.

This particular beginning for Abraham is somewhat ominous with respect to his relationship to 'the world'. Translations (like the KJV) may avoid the bald statement that Pharaoh took Sarai as wife. Given the flexibility one can impose on the Hebrew verb, this may be excusable. Perhaps she was only in the harem, and no coitus had occurred. The repetition of this episode with Isaac and Abimelek, (26:1-11) later in the story may tip us off, as any repetition should, to a larger structural move to highlight what is contained. (Or it may be just a repetition, a failure to learn to avoid offense.)

In this section, the migration into and out of the land and into and out of Egypt is surrounded by Abram and all that he had, verses 5 elaborately stated, and 20, simply summarized. Does this include all the gifts from Pharaoh?

Genesis 12 Fn Min Max Syll

1 And Yahweh said to Abram, Go for yourself from your land, and from your kindred, and from the house of your ancestors,
to the land that I will show you.

5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot, the son of his brother, and all their belongings that belonged to them, and the group that they dealt with in Xaran,
and they went forth to walk toward the land of Canaan, and they came toward the land of Canaan.

Jeremiah 52

This chapter is called an Appendix in my old JB. Really! It is a summary of the destruction and a reflection of all the items of cultic value that were ruined for their precious metals. It reads and sings like a lament for a lost culture. Verse 18, another long verse with no rest, just a continuing list of things lost, and this continuing into verse 19 (bars 158-168 below). (It's different, isn't it, thinking of a scripture verse with bar numbers.)

Capital (כפתר) is also כתר, so close it seems the peh got dropped between Exodus 25 and Jeremiah 52. Not impossible, I suppose. I have let them be equivalent in English.
