Isaiah 13

This is the fifteenth occurrence encountered so far of what must be many prophecies of the day of Yahweh. The first two that we have encountered in Isaiah. One chapter (13) so far in Ezekiel has the phrase. The twelve have the rest (Amos, Obadiah, Malachi, Zephaniah, Joel) Joel 1:15b is identical to Isaiah 13:6b. JB notes this as Joel quoting Isaiah.

Verse 12 is a rest point, a rationale for the anger of Yahweh. (No one else reads it this way in the translations that I have. But why not? Do we assume that Isaiah has no insight into the mind of God but is simply inviting schadenfreude?)

1 A load about Babel,
that Isaiah child of Amoz gazed on.

11
2 C On a protruding hill, lift up a standard. Exalt a voice for them.
Elevate a hand, and enter the doors of princes.

12
3 I myself have commanded my holy ones.
Also I have called my valiant ones for my anger, those who exult in my pride.
3e 4C 9
17
4 f The voice of the tumult of the hills, the likeness of a people abundant,
the noisy voice of the kingdoms of nations gathered. Yahweh of hosts has conscripted the host of war.

25
5 Coming from a land distant, from an extreme of the heavens,
Yahweh and the vessels of his indignation to inflict pain on all the earth.
3d 4B 13
13
6 Howl, for near is the day of Yahweh,
as devastation from the Sufficient who comes.
3e 4B 9
7
7 So all hands are slackened,
and every mortal heart will melt.

8
8 And they will be vexed. Spasms and pangs will grasp them. As if giving birth they will writhe.
Each to its friend will be astonished, faces of flame their faces.

16
9 Behold the day of Yahweh comes, vicious and furious and fierce anger,
to set the land desolate. And sinners he will exterminate from it.
3e 4C 16
18
10 For the stars of the heavens and their follies will not boast their light.
The sun will be darkness in its going forth, and the moon will not illuminate its light.
3e 4C 16
17
11 And I will visit on the world its hurt, and on the wicked their iniquity,
and I will eradicate the pride of the presumptuous, and the pride of the ruthless I will abase.
3e 4C 17
17
12 Precious is the mortal more than pure gold,
and the earthling than the finest gold of Ophir.
3e 4A 6
8
13 Therefore I will make heavens shudder and will the earth quake from her place,
in the fury of Yahweh of hosts and in the day of his fierce anger.
3e 4B 15
14
14 And it will be as a gazelle impelled, and as a flock and there is no one collecting.
Each to its people will face, and each to its land will withdraw.
3e 4C 14
14
15 Everyone who is found will be thrust through,
and everyone snatched will fall by the sword.
3e 4A 7
10
16 And their infants will be dashed to pieces in their sight.
Their houses will be plundered and their wives raped.
3e 4A 11
11
17 Behold me arousing against them the Medes,
who silver, do not consider, and gold, do not delight in it.
3d 4B 10
15
18 And bows will dash the youngsters in pieces.
And the fruit of the belly, they will have no compassion on. Against children, their eye will not spare.
3e 4B 10
15
19 And Babel, the estate of the kingdoms, the adornment of the pride of the Chaldeans,
will be as when God changed Sodom and Gomorrah.
3e 4C 17
15
20 It will not be inhabited in perpetuity, nor will it be dwelt in ever, generation by generation,
nor will an Arabian tent there, nor will shepherds recline there.
3e 4B 13
15
21 But wild things will recline there and their houses will be full of kin,
and the daughters of the ostrich will dwell there and kids will skip there.
3e 4C 14
16
22 And howling jackals will answer in their widowhood and dragons in the exquisite palaces,
and her time to enter is near and her days will not be drawn out.
